Please read them carefully before entering. For the first time ever, Hermès is organising an international scarf design competition, open to all those possessing artistic talents expressed through manual skill: designers, artists, illustrators, graphic designers...Hermès will purchase the originals of the competition winners’ designs with a view to reproduction in one of its future collections.Since 1937, Hermès has reproduced over 2,000 original designs on silk for its scarf collections. Designers from all backgrounds have distinguished themselves in this exercise in composition and narrative. Time after time, young graphic artists or experienced designers from around the world have devoted their talent to ever-contemporary creativity.Above all a space for freedom, the scarf is nourished by paradoxes, as Pierre-Alexis Dumas, Hermès artistic director, explains: Enigmatic yet clear, simple yet luxuriant, meaningful yet mysterious right down to the tiniest detail; enclosed within a limited space yet free, open to infinite interpretations.Please read full description of regulations and benefits in the OFFICIAL RULES.The competition will take place in three phases:
Phase 18th March €€ 31st May 2019: RegistrationCandidates register on the Designboom website. They create and fill out a profile containing their personal details, and examples of their previous work.After examining the applications, the Hermès jury will pick around 100 of them. The selected candidates will be informed by email towards mid-July 2019.Phase 2 Mid-July €€ Mid-September 2019: Presentation of scarf projectsThe selected candidates then present their scarf design project composed of:- A short text setting out the theme of the design ,- A sketch of the overall composition,- One or several details to allow the jury to assess the quality of the drawing.Around 10 candidates are selected by the Hermès jury. They will be informed by email towards mid-October 2019.Phase 3 Mid-October 2019 €€ Mid-January 2020: Production of a final design to scaleThe selected candidates are invited to spend two days at Hermès, in Paris, during November 2019. How To EnterPrior to submitting entries, each Participant will be asked to fill in and submit an official registration form which requests the Participant’s information listed in Appendix 1.During the registration, the Participants will select a password to log into a submission space for their entry to the Contest . The Participant is obligated to keep his/her Access Data secret and prevent unauthorized use by third-parties.For the purpose of this Contest, the Submission must follow the technical, creative, and legal requirements disclosed on the Contest Website and in these Official Rules, including, but not limited to, the Submission Content Guidelines . Images and texts must be in digital format.
3 - The work may be produced on and by any medium but must be submitted to the Contest section as low-res JPEG format. - The Work and Submission must not contain any viruses, worms, corrupt files, Trojan horses, or other forms of corruptive code or content that may harm or compromise the Contest Site and/or the proper conduct of the Contest.5. Intellectual Property and LicenseAll submitted works will remain the exclusive property of the Participant, subject to the provisions laid out hereinafter. The Sponsor and the Producer will have the right to use all of the works submitted as part of the Contest, and all images depicted therein, in any promotion or for any non-commercial purpose. By submitting a work from Phase I onward, the Participant grants the Sponsor and the Producer the non-exclusive, unlimited, royalty-free, rights to publish, represent and reproduce in all media now known or hereafter discovered, all or part of the works for an unlimited period, and worldwide, within the context of the Contest.The Sponsor has the right to apply minor modifications without damaging the integrity of the work submitted from Phase II onward, e.g. add the Hermès logo and text, reframing, changing the colours, cutting the background or parts of it. In case the Sponsor and/or the Producer want to bring major changes to the submitted work for publication, public relations, or exhibition purposes, the Sponsor and/or the Producer will contact the Participant and inform him/her about the use of his/her work to obtain his/her consent. During Phases II and III, neither any candidate nor the Producer or any third party may communicate on the drawings before any first disclosure by the Sponsor itself and without prior written consent of the Sponsor.By submitting a design in the Contest for Phase II, the concerned Selected Participant agrees to provide the Sponsor with the right of first refusal to the exclusive use of the design. This option is valid for 12 months after the end of the Contest.The Contest Prize received will include the transfer of the material property rights attached to the design.The Sponsor’s intellectual property rights will only be used as part of the Contest and remain the Sponsor’s sole and unique property. The Participants who choose to incorporate the Sponsor’s intellectual property in their work and are ultimately not selected will have to remove all material belonging to the Sponsor from their drawing or discard their drawing altogether.If the Sponsor did not exercise the option within the exclusivity period of 12 months after the end of the Contest and/or the Participant was not selected by the Sponsor during Phase II and III, the Participants shall retain the full ownership on their works. The Participants shall be free to use these non-selected works in whatever manner they deem appropriate without any reference to the Sponsor and as long as these works do not integrate nor copy any design, model, trademark, copyright, logo, or any… duly registered by and/or belonging to the Sponsor.If the Participant wishes to communicate the Contest in his/her portfolio, the Participant will always mention the fact that his/her Work was realized within the framework of a competition named “Le Grand Prix du Carré Hermès” for Hermès and not as part of a collaboration between the Participant and Hermès.The Participants agree that the Sponsor and the Producer shall have the sole discretion in determining the extent and manner of non-commercial use of the Submissions and are not obligated to use any Submission. Each Participant acknowledges that other Participants may have created plans and concepts contained in their Submission that may have familiarities or similarities to his/her own Submission, and that he/she will not be entitled to any compensation or right to negotiate with the Contest Entities because of these familiarities or similarities.6. Guarantees and IndemnityEach Participant guarantees that he or she has read, understood and will follow the Official Rules. Each Participant further guarantees that their Submission and all materials and matter therein: are wholly original creations of the Participant and are not a copy or imitation of any other material; will not infringe or violate any right whatsoever, including, without limitation, any personal rights or any property rights of any person or entity and the use thereof will result in no third party liability or obligations; and is not the subject of any threatened or pending litigation, claim or dispute that might give rise to litigation, which adversely affects or in any way prejudices, impairs or diminishes the rights granted hereunder or the value thereof. Each Participant further guarantees that he or she has the right to agree to and fully perform in compliance with these Official Rules and that no consent of third parties is required to grant the rights hereunder. Each Participant further acknowledges and agrees that he/she has not previously granted, assigned or otherwise hypothecated his/her Submission to any other third party. Further, each Participant guarantees that the Sponsor’s use of any Submission shall not violate an agreement previously signed by the Participant. Each Participant agrees to indemnify and hold the Released Parties harmless from and against any third-party claim, to the extent relating to any breach of any representation, warranty or covenant made by such Participant in connection with his or her acceptance of these Official Rules or Contest activities.7. Determining the Selected Participants, finalists and Final Winners1. Phase I €€ Entry to the Contest:a) March 8th, 2019 to May 31st, 2019 - The first step of this entry process is to complete the online registration form and submit samples of the participant’s previous works in JPEG form as well as a 250-word presentation of their work and motivation in English .b) June 1st, 2019 to Mid-July 2019 - The Sponsor will have access to review and evaluate the Submission and finally, it will select the ‘Selected Participants’ to submit entries for ‘Le Grand Prix du Carré Hermès’. These Selected Participants will be notified via email, by the Sponsor and/ or the Producer.2. Phase II €€ Development of the scarf design projects for the Selected Participants:a) Mid-July 2019 to Mid-September 2019 - the Selected Participants will draft a general sketch of the square project in a square format with a 250-word text presenting the square project and 2 details to judge the quality of the line according to the relevant format and instructions given by the Sponsor and the Producer and upload their entries on the Contest Site.b) Mid-September 2019 to Mid-October 2019 - The Sponsor will have access to review and evaluate the submitted entries and will shortlist the entries to approximatively 10 Finalists.3. Phase III €€ Completion of scarf designs by Finalists:a) Mid-October 2019 €€ The Sponsor may invite the Finalists for a 2-day workshop at the Hermès headquarters in France on November, except in case of a force majeure event/cancellation by the Sponsor for any cause not reasonably within its control.b) By Mid-January 2020 at the latest, the Finalists will send their final design to the Sponsor.c) March 1st, 2020: Selection by the Sponsor and announcement, of up to three Final Winners of the Contest.This schedule may be modified at the Sponsor' sole discretion, in which case, the Sponsor will inform the Participates.
REQUIREMENTS There are no age,nationality or profession limits, the contest is open to all,except for the organizers of Posterheroes, PLUG associates, thejury or any of their family members, Favini S.r.l. employees, IEDFirenze employees and all the people work-wise related to them.TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS Files must comply the followingtechnical features : size: 70×100 cm €€ 300dpi; max 20MB; vertical layout; JPG or PDF format; Artworks must bedesigned to be printed; Artworks must not include any symbols orsignatures that could trace back to the authors; If the graphicwork contain text, this must necessarily be written in English.JURY After the participation deadline, artworks will beevaluated by a qualified jury composed of international experts ingraphic arts and communications. The names of the jury will bepublished here: www.posterheroes.org. The jury will select theforty best proposals. Evaluation criteria for selection willbe: originality, quality in relation to the efficacy of the messageand emotional aspects expressed by the posters. Files will beautomatically renamed to guarantee anonymity, during the process ofevaluation by the jurors. The file name will be automaticallyrenamed to grant the anonymity of the artwork for the jurors.Selected works will be printed 70 x 100 cm, will be published onthe catalogue of the initiative and will become part of the showsand future exhibition events and on the organizers websites.Associazione Culturale Plug, Favini S.r.l. and IED Firenze, as theorganizers of the contest, will be responsible for facilitating inan independent manner the works of the jury. Favini S.r.l. incollaboration with PLUG €€ non profit Cultural Association and IEDFirenze will chose 12 images, independently from the jury, to beuse for the calendar of the year 2019. AWARD AND CREDITSAmong the forty selected proposals, the jury will chose thewinning one. A 2.500 euros prize will be assigned to the winner , that will be alsoinvited to the exhibition opening . To the authors of the selected artworks will besent a free copy of the catalogue of the contest. To the authors ofthe 12 selected images for the calendar will be sent a free copy ofthe calendar. The selected posters will be published here:www.posterheroes.org. The selected posters will become part of theshows and future exhibition events of the organizers.DEADLINE Works can be submitted starting from October 17th,2017 until midnight ofFebruary 17th, 2018. Posters received after the establisheddeadline will not be considered for the contest. In case ofsubmission problems due to a technical failure on the website, theindependent facilitator will decide whether to accept or not theposters at its own discretion after the deadline. Plug reserves theright to extend the deadlines by announcing any changes on thewebsite and on their social media channels. The selected imageswill be announced by 19th March 2018 on the websitewww.posterheroes.org and through the communications channels of theorganizers. They can be submitted only by their author . They alsodeclare to be the holder of any moral and creativity rights. In theevent of a dispute, the author indemnifies the Organizers from anykind of responsibilities, costs and expenses which should arise dueto the content of the work. Participants grant to the Organizers anirrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, royalty-free,international license to use and publicly display their artworks inexhibitions, catalogues and printed or digital medias by mentioningthe authors and the contest Posterheroes. The license also grantsto Plug the right to use the artworks for fundraising activities. Any other use of the artworks will be agreed with theauthors. This may include, but it is not limited to: artistic andcultural promotion activities; social activism campaigns;educational materials. ACCEPTANCE The participation to thecontest implies the totalacceptance of the present regulation and specifically of thefollowing points: requirements, terms and conditions, technicalrequirements, admitted languages, jury, evaluation criteria,independent facilitator, deadline, awards, privacy,copyright.
3.1 Information you provide directly to us
€€Submissions must be the original work of the entrant. Submissions cannot have been made public before or concurrent to this contest.
€€Submitted works cannot have been entered into other competitions. Submissions may not be displayed publicly without the agreement of the contest organizer.
€€Worldwide rights related to patents, utility models, designs, trademarks, or copyrights for winning submissions shall reside with the contest organizer for any works selected for awards . The entrant agrees not to exercise his/her rights to such works for winning submissions. Payment for the transfer of said rights from the entrant to the contest organizer shall be deemed as made in the form of contest prize money.
€€All rights and obligations related to works not selected for awards shall, as a rule, reside with the related entrant.
€€The contest organizer recommends all entrants take steps to protect their rights as necessary.
€€An award given to any winning submitted work with the same design as an article made public may be withdrawn at any time, even after winners have been announced. The foregoing also applies to any submitted works that infringe on the intellectual property rights of a third party, either prior to, concurrent with, or subsequent to submission.
€€The contest organizer may ask entrants questions about their works during the judging process or in connection with product commercialization.
€€The contest organizer shall make decisions related to matters not addressed by contest rules. Entrants not agreeing to decisions may withdraw their entry.
€€The organizer shall not be held responsible for any expenses incurred with the entry of works withdrawn. The contest organizer will exercise due care in the handling and transportation of works submitted. However, the contest organizer shall not be liable for any damage or loss resulting from natural disasters or other unexpected events.
€€Works submitted shall belong to the contest organizer and shall not be returned. The contest organizer retains all rights related to contest exhibition or publication of submitted Works.
